Port gymnasts keep scoring high

Port Washington High School’s gymnastics team continues to post high scores late in the regular season.

Port beat Waupun, 126.75 to 119.85, on Jan. 20. Maddie Mellesmoen and Chloe Barber led on vault, each with 8.05. Barber had 8.3 on bars and 8.25 on floor exercise. Vivi Styles had 8.0 on beam.

Port topped Nicolet at home on Jan. 27, 132.05 to 129.8.

Mellesmoen had 8.45 on vault, one of three Pirates scoring higher than 8. Barber had 8.575 on bars. Styles had 8.9 on beam and 8.6 on floor.

Port scored 132.825 points and finished second of nine teams at the Antigo Invite on Jan. 31. On vault, Mellesmoen had 8.675, Barber had 8.475, Styles had 8.4 and Sabrina Eixenberger had 8.3.

On bars, Mellesmoen had 8.375. Barber had 9.05 on beam and Styles had 8.8. Styles had 8.725 on floor, and Barber had 8.625.

Port lost at home to Shorewood/University School of Milwaukee, 131 to 130.125 on Feb. 4, which was senior night. Port honored seniors Grace Baumann, Mellesmoen, Milena Valse, Cate Gaskell, Cassy Klemann and Ashaya Hughes.

Barber had 8.8 on vault and 8.725 on bars. Baumann had 8.625 on beam. Styles had 8.7 on floor.

Port on Feb. 11 won at West Allis Hale/Divine Savior Holy Angels, 127.725 to 125.7. Barber tied for the top all-around score with 34.125 points. She led the team on bars with 8.475, vault with 8.7 and beam with 8.625.

Styles led on floor with 8.425.

“The team is really doing an outstanding job of improving skills and getting more consistent, which should lead to peaking at the right time,” coach Gale Sigler said.

Port competes in the Greater Metro Conference Meet on Saturday, Feb. 21, in Waupun.

“As we approach our conference meet we’ll be looking for the finishing touches to any of the new skills we’ve recently added in hopes of notching up both individual and team scores,” Sigler said.
