Port, Grafton tennis seasons come to a close as sub-sectional

Grafton High School’s tennis team picked up three victories at the Sheboygan Falls Division 2 sub-sectional last week, but couldn’t advance beyond that.

Kate Aleknavicius at No. 2 singles beat Kewaskum’s Grace Marchello, 6-2, 6-1, before losing to Victoria Schutz of Brookfield Academy.

Thu Vo at No. 4 singles beat Sheboygan Falls’ Olivia Blaha, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Vanessa Goris of University School of Milwaukee.

The No. 2 doubles team of Katie Schroeder and Jamie Kretlow won its first round match, 6-4, 6-3, before losing to Stephanie Guy and Audrey Treptow of University School of Milwaukee.

Coach John Kangas said while the Black Hawks couldn’t quite compete with the top four teams — Kohler, University School, Shorewood and Brookfield Academy — Grafton was a solid fifth-place team of the nine at the sub-sectional.

Port Washington didn’t win any matches at its Division 1 sub-sectional at Homestead.

Kaylee Doll at No. 1 singles came the closest, losing to Jada Spence of Pius XI, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

“Kaylee Doll played a competitive match against Pius XI Catholic by using short angles and lobs,” coach Melonie Zielinski said.

Chloe and Tess Schueller at No.1 doubles lost to Tia Hebbring and Haley Matthiesen of Menomonee Falls, 6-2, 6-1, but took the majority of games to deuce.

“They both used key strategy and effective net play,” Zielinski said.

Morgan Stone and Hope Christiansen at No. 3 doubles lost to Cedarburg, 6-3, 6-0, “used low baseline shots and net shots to frustrate their opponents,” Zielinski said.
