Pirates capture silver; Black Hawks win two big relays

Port Washington High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams both finished second in the Glacier Trails Conference Relay Meet at Sheboygan South on May 5.

The boys scored 109 points, just short of West Bend West’s 112.

“We were in a battle with West Bend West for the title and they edged us out in the end. We ended up winning seven different events, which was more than any other team, but West was able to score more consistently across the board,” coach Mark Pasten said.

Port’s winning relays in running events were: the 110-meter high hurdles with ThiLar Goodman, first, 16.12 seconds, LeRoy Pinkston, fourth, 16.77, and Jarek Roman, seventh, 17.79; the 300 hurdles with Goodman, first, 43.1, Da’vion Igess, third, 44.76, and Pinkston, eighth, 47.86; the 800 relay of Joe Rico, Kade Kintop, Kiya Sullivan and Kalin Mundt, 1 minute, 34.59 seconds; and the sprint medley relay of Mundt, Kintop, Rico and Sullivan, 1:39.87.

Port won three field events: the long jump relay with Sullivan, fifth, 19-9.5 feet, Ricon, 19-6.5, and Roman, 18-11; triple jump relay with Igess, first, 42-6.5, Roman, seventh, 39-1.75, and Goodman, eighth, 38-10; and the pole vault relay with Bryce Nichelson, second 10-3, Chase Barner, fourth, 9-0, and Austin Knapp, eighth, 8-0.

“We really went after that title, so it stung to fall a little short. The boys gave it an outstanding effort,” Pasten said.

He singled out the efforts of multiple athletes.

Jameson Koebel ran two 1,600s and an 800. John Dohrwardt ran a 1,600, 1,200 and an 800. Goodman did both hurdle races, the triple jump and ran in the 1,600 relay. Roman, a freshman, raced in the 110 hurdles and did the high, long and triple jumps. Rico ran in the 800, sprint medley and 1,600 relays and did the long jump. Sullivan ran in the 800, sprint medley and 1,600 relays and did the long jump.

“We had some exhausted athletes at the end of the night,” Pasten said.

Port girls edged by KML

The Pirate girls scored 93 points. Kettle Moraine Lutheran won with 98.

Port won two running events: the distance medley relay of Marietta Knepfel, Emersyn Loose, Amanda Crass and Ellie Knepfel, 14:06.55; and the sprint medley relay of Peytan Kinzel, Amari Brownmiller, Loose and Natalie Northrup, 2:00.02.

Port won two field events: the pole vault — Grace Baumann, 9-6, Ellie Lanser, 7-0, and Avery Johnson, 7-0; and the high jump — Peyton Keller, 5-2, Lillian Tradewell, 4-8, and Baumann, 4-6.

“We used everybody that we had and they all gave maximum effort, and we put some kids in events they’ve never done before,” coach Joe Adamak said.

Port was second in the 800 and 1,600 relays. The winning squads are the state record-holders, Adamak said.

Port’s 800 relay of Harlow Albeiero, Northrup, Keller and Ada Mueller-Stenz finished in 1:48.45. The 1,600 relay of Loose, Kinzel, Northrup and Albiero finished in 4:17.71.

Port competes in the Black Hawk Invite at Grafton on Friday, May 15, and in the Glacier Trails Meet on Tuesday, May 19.

Grafton relay wins big

Grafton’s boys won the 800 relay at the Myrhum Invite at Arrowhead on Saturday. The meet included nearly 1,500 athletes from 95 different schools.

Max Glab, Hunter Klippel, DJ James and Seva Belousov won in 1:29.56, edging Arrowhead runner-up by .02 seconds.

“Seva found another gear down the homestretch and let out a scream as he crossed the line,” coach Jason Meinen said.

The girls’ 1,600 relay of Emily Sewell, Abby Barthelemy, Melanie Morgan and Cali Tagliapietra was second in 4:05.6. It was five seconds behind New Berlin West.

Callie Faust was 12th in the 1,600 in a season-best 5:15.78.

At the North Shore Conference Relay Meet at Nicolet on May 6, Grafton won two events.

The boys’ 800 relay of that same quartet won in 1:29.24.

The girls’ 1,600 relay of the same four won in 4:04.38.

Jack Marti’s long jump of 20-9 was the second longest of the meet and one inch behind Homestead’s Jeridon Clark.

Grafton was to compete in the Richmond/Erickson Invite in Wauwatosa on Wednesday, May 13. The Hawks host the Black Hawk Invite on Friday, May 15. The North Shore Conference Meet is Monday, May 18, at Cedarburg.
