Ozaukee girls come together as a team

It was a double comeback last Thursday for the Ozaukee High School girls’ basketball team.

The Warriors first rebounded from a 67-39 home loss to Kohler on Jan. 13, and in the same gym in the second half against Brookfield Academy had to bounce back from losing one of their key starters to injury.

Senior guard Savannah Quad went down with a knee injury with nearly 15 minutes to play, and the Warriors holding a 36-20 lead.

The Blue Knights tried to come back in what became a physical and somewhat wild contest, but the Warriors never let their lead slip to less than seven the rest of the way in a 58-49 victory.

“That’s a big loss but we had to find a way to work together as a team and pull through,” sophomore guard Bianca Marini said.

“Savannah’s a huge part of our team. When she went down we all knew we were up by so much we did not want to blow that and we wanted to do it for her,” senior forward Chloe Dybul said.

Sophomore guard Mya Schroeder said, “We knew we had to do it for her. We needed to pick it back up again, and I thought we did a decent job at the end. It kind of got a little chaotic.”

Coach Linda Weyker said the girls’ camaraderie shone through.

“Every single one of those girls, when (Quade) came out, went down to Savannah, gave her a hug, gave her a high five. This is a close-knit group of girls and that’s what’s so key on the court this year,” she said.

Dybul had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Schroeder had 12 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Quade had 12 points and Marini had 10. Kenedeigh Harness had six points and six rebounds.

Ozaukee started hot in taking a 34-15 halftime lead. They held the Blue Knights scoreless the last 10 and a half minutes of the half.

“When we play together and move the ball well, they play well,” Weyker said.

She praised reserves Katelyn Gomez, Marissa Ter Maat, Alegra Krenek and Addison Kurlinski.

“We can pull and give breaks and they can go right back in, and these girls are putting their heart and souls into it,” she said.

Ozaukee had an off night against Kohler. Quade had 12 points and Dybul had seven.

The Warriors, 7-6, was to play at Howards Grove on Tuesday, Jan 20. They play at Reedsville on Thursday, Jan. 22, and host Random Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

CG-B girls drop third straight

Cedar Grove-Belgium lost to Sheboygan Christian, 57-52, on Jan. 13, and at Mishicot, 71-70, last Friday.

On Jan. 13, Gracie Schmidt had 25 points, eight steals and five rebounds. Kami Horn had 12 points and six rebounds.

Against Mishicot, Schmidt had 23 points and nine rebounds. Tessa Krause had 15 points, Horn had 12 and Laila Arrowwood had eight points and seven rebounds. Arden Getschman had five points and seven rebounds.

The Rockets, 2-12, hosted Kohler on Jan. 20. They play at Kewaskum on Jan. 23 and Roncalli on Monday, Jan. 26.
