Ozaukee, CG-Belgium track teams rely on long runners early

Cross country season was months ago, but a couple of Cedar Grove-Belgium High School runners are still in form.

Senior Weston Huenink, who finished 29th at the Division 2 state cross country meet last fall, won the 1,600-meter race at last Friday’s Princeton/Green Lake ADE indoor meet in 4 minutes, 42.32 seconds. Nolan Brill was second in 5:07.16. Jack Krause was fourth in the 3,200 in 11:47.07.

That helped the Rockets to 36 points and an eighth-place finish of 15 teams. Ripon won with 99, followed by Mayville’s 81.5.

Three relays rounded out the other top-10 finishes for the boys.

The 1,600 relay of Cameron Holle, Noah Peterson, Abram Brill and Nolan Brill was third in 3:54.7.

The 800 relay of Daxton Vanderbeek, Noe Celedon, Peterson and Parker Held was fifth in 1:44.07.

The 3,200 relay of Noah Hopeman, Rome Miller, Abram Brill and Krause was sixth in 10:13.82.

Peterson was 11th in the 60 in 7.65 seconds. Eli Nehring was 11th in the 400 in 1:01.73.

Van Driest highlights girls’ effort

Sophomore Zaylia Van Driest cleared 4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump, taking third place to lead the Rocket girls.

Brynlee Schmidt, the cross country school record holder, was fifth in the 1,600 in 6:00.58.

The 1,600 relay of Aubrey Nett, Antonia Leonards, Lydia Schmidt and Brynlee Schmidt was seventh in 4:51.74.

Nett was eighth in the 400 in 1:14.7. Leonards was ninth in the 800 in 3:01.04.

The Rockets scored 12.5 points and finished 12th of 15 teams. Columbus won with 81 points, followed by Mayville’s and Living Word Lutheran’s 58 each.

The Rockets take some time off for spring break before hosting a meet on Thursday, April 9.

Lentz wins shot put for Warrior boys

Junior Jack Lentz threw the shot 47-9.25 and won the event at last Saturday’s Raider Invite at Sheboygan North.

Most of the rest of the Warriors were led by cross country runners.

Nicholas Schubert, who was 20th in the Division 3 state cross country meet in fall, was third in the 3,200 in 10:47.99.

The 3,200 relay of Wyatt Borchardt, Fritz Hoffmann, Ayden Hartmann and Schubert was fourth in 9:20.66.

Borchardt was ninth in the 1,600 in 5:21.61.

Hoffmann was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 18-1.5. Braydon Lowrance-Eischen was 11th in the 400 in 1:03.13.

The boys scored 23 points and finished 10th of 14 teams. Sheboygan North won with 111 points, edging Plymouth’s 108.

Glaeser leads Ozaukee girls

Junior Madison Glaeser finished third in the 3,200 in 13:35.97 and Eva VanMinsel was fifth in 14:48.87 to lead the Warrior girls.

Ayva Johnson was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14-7.

The 3,200 relay of Katelyn Gomez, Glaeser, VanMinsel and Maggie Hoffmann was sixth in 11:50.96.

Helen Utecht was seventh in the shot put with a throw of 30-10. Kennedy Brown’s toss of 29-5 was good for ninth.

Lilia Steinert was 11th in the high jump by clearing 4-6.

The girls scored 19 points and finished 11th. Port Washington won with 120.5.

Ozaukee competes at Manitowoc Lincoln next, the boys in the Earl Hebert Invite on Thursday, March 26, and the girls in the Pam Kjono Invite on Friday, March 27.
