Officials seek input on Pioneer, Port road intersection project planned for 2027

Local and state officials are seeking input on improvements planned for the intersection of Pioneer and Port Washington roads in the Town of Grafton and the City of Mequon.

Construction is currently scheduled for 2027. 

According to a press release:

Goals of the project are to improve safety and correct operational issues.

The proposed improvements include realigning the left turn lanes on all four legs to provide better sight lines for left-turning traffic. 

That will include widening the pavement on the north and south legs of the intersection and realigning the medians on the east and west legs of the intersection.

Plans also call for replacing traffic signals with new bases, poles, signal heads, and wiring, adding left turn arrows for all four directions to allow protected left turns as well as adding flashing yellow arrows.

Officials expect the intersection to remain open with temporary signals during construction, although both Pioneer and Port Washington roads may be limited to one lane at times.

Daytime flagging may be used to help direct traffic safely through the work zone.

The project is expected to take two to three months.

Right-of-way acquisition is expected at a few properties adjacent to the intersection to construct turn lanes and for traffic signal improvements. 

Ozaukee County is expected to begin real estate acquisition in early 2026.
