The Northern Ozaukee School District announced this week in a letter to parents that it will have remote-only learning next week, primarily due to staffing issues caused by an increase in coronavirus exposure.

All students in the district’s three schools will go to remote learning from Monday, Nov. 23, through Friday, Dec. 4, Supt. Dave Karrels said in the letter.

The district held all classes in-person for the first 11 weeks of the year except for families who opted for remote learning.

“Over the last two weeks, we have experienced a significant increase of staff absences as a result of a variety of factors, including family-related quarantines and the effects Covid-19 can have on other factors related to child care and other closures in the greater community,” Karrels wrote to parents.

“Unfortunately, because of the high number of staff absences and the significant impact of Covid-19 on the school community, we need to temporarily switch to remote learning.”

In-person learning will resume Monday, Dec. 7, Karrels said.

Students will continue to follow their class schedules, and attendance will be taken by teachers.

Karrels said other school activities will continue as scheduled.

“Since this switch is related to teacher staffing, our co-curricular and extra-curricular activities can continue after school following safety protocols,” he said.

A number of other school districts have also gone to remote learning, including the Random Lake School District, where 20% of its staff have been unable to work. That district plans to get back to in-person learning on Monday, Nov. 30.
