Nobody hurt in derailment of railroad cars carrying coal in Town of Belgium

A train derailed along the tracks in the Town of Belgium on Saturday.

The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call made by a Union Pacific Railroad crew member who was on the train when nine of the 135 cars that were carrying coal derailed shortly after 4:30 p.m. near Highway K and Hilly Lane, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Four of the cars were lying on their sides between Highway K and Jay Road, and a number of cars were backed up into Sheboygan County.

No injuries were reported.

The road was cleared about an hour later. The railroad tracks were closed until Sunday afternoon and open for slow-moving trains as of Tuesday.

Union Pacific crews were to continue removing the wrecked train cars throughout the week.

The Ozaukee County Emergency Management Department assisted the Sheriff’s Office.

The incident was turned over to investigators of the Union Pacific Railroad and all reports were sent to the proper regulatory authorities, the Sheriff’s Office said.
