Nature walks to be held at Cedarburg Bog

A number of nature walks are being held at the Cedarburg Bog in June and July.

A spring migrant bird walk led by Alex Mann will be held from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday, June 6. Those attending are asked to bring binoculars and wear sturdy shoes.

Butterflies, wildflowers and birds will be sought during a 10 a.m. to noon walk on Sunday, June 28.

Kate Redmond will lead the walk along the trail from the parking lot on Highway 33 to the pier at Watts Lake.

Boots are not needed, but those attending are urged to bring binoculars, drinking water and bug spray. There are no bathrooms.

Participants should meet at the Department of Natural Resources parking lot on Highway 33.

Dragonflies are the topic for a 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. walk on Sunday, July 19.

Jamie Schiesel, ecological education manager at the Mequon Nature Preserve and a board member of the Wisconsin Dragonfly Society, will conduct a short indoor program followed by a field trip through the bog looking for odonates — dragonflies and damselflies.

Wisconsin has more than 160 species of odonates that may be found from April to early November. Those attending will learn about the anatomy and life cycle of these insects.

Bug nets will be provided.

Children are welcome, but the program will focus on adult education and comprehension in identification of the many species of odonates.

Pets are not allowed on the walks.

To register for the walks, visit www.bogfriends.org and click on Programs & Events tab.

A $5 donation is suggested.
