Memorial Day events set

The Village of Belgium will hold its annual Memorial Day commemoration on Monday.

At 8 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 200 Park St., a reading of the names of all the deceased veterans buried in cemeteries will be held.

At 10:30 a.m., the parade will step off on Main Street at East Lane and head west to Community Park. People are asked not to park along the parade route.

Among the entries is the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School marching band, which will perform a medley of patriotic songs.

At 11 a.m., a program will be held at Community Park. Boy Scouts will lower and raise the American flag, and a rifle salute will be given by the Melvin Wester American Legion Post 412 color guard and firing squad.

The keynote speaker will be Morreen Mersberger, the Legion’s Educator of the Year in 2018. Mersberger is retired from teaching science at Cedar Grove-Belgium Middle School.

After the program, brats and burgers will be for sale at the park. Beer, soda and water will be free, courtesy of the Legion.

The Village of Cedar Grove is holding its annual parade at 8:45 a.m. at the firehouse, 306 S. Main St. It travels to Walvoord Cemetery and back to Memorial Park. Pastor Ron Sanford of Faith Reformed Church will give a short address.
