Marlys Herbert

Marlys J. Herbert of Port Washington, formerly of Belgium and Fond du Lac, passed away early Saturday morning, Nov. 20, 2021, at Kathy Hospice in West Bend.  She was 93 years old.

The daughter of Ervin and Mabel Barkelar Brandt, Marlys was born on April 29, 1928,  in Fond du Lac, where she attended local schools, graduating from Goodrich High School, Class of 1946.

Marlys was united in marriage with David Herbert on Aug. 20, 1949, at St. Mary’s Church Rectory in Fond du Lac, Wis.  

She was employed by the Fond du Lac Public Schools until 1953.

The couple moved to Port Washington in late summer of 1953 to raise their family.

David preceded her in death in 2009.

Mrs. Herbert was a faithful member of First Congregational Church in Port Washington, joining in 1957, where she participated in the choir.  She had been the secretary at the church for 18 years, retiring in 1984.  

She was also a member of the Port Washington Senior Center, Belgium American Legion Post 412 Auxiliary and the Hawthorn Honey’s golf group.

Marlys was a past honored queen, Job’s Daughter, Bethel #3 FDL and past member of Chapter 70, Eastern Star, also in FDL.

She enjoyed knitting, golfing and playing cards and played with various bridge and sheepshead groups.

For many years, Marlys and David wintered in Sun City West, Ariz.  

Above all, Mrs. Herbert loved the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children Brant Herbert (Lisa) of Anthem, Ariz., William (Linda) Herbert of Wautoma, Mark Herbert of Sheboygan (Laurie Herbert of Sheboygan) and Julie (Douglas) Decent of West Bend.  

She is also survived by grandchildren Brandon (Kristine), Justin (Andrea), Nicholas (Jane), Jordan (Alisha), Anthony (Kara), Zachary (Paige), Blake, Brooke (Ian) and Julie (the late Jason).

Further surviving her are great-grandchildren  Kora, Griffin, Blair, Mila, Hanalei, Grayson, Cecilia, Leo, Drew and Dominic; brother-in-law Steve Herbert (Melaine); and nieces Nancy Morris and Mary (Mark) Albrecht.

She also leaves behind many cherished and dear friends.

Marlys was preceded in death by her parents, husband David, grandson Jason and sister Dolores Stephany.

 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Marlys’ name to First Congregational Church, Port Washington; the American Cancer Society; or the American Heart Association.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff at Aurora Health Center in Port Washington, Aurora Medical Center in Grafton and Kathy’s Hospice West Bend for all their devoted care and compassion.

A celebration of life will be held in May 2022
