Lions help residents with special needs

Six Lions clubs from northern Ozaukee County recently contributed funds to provide support to two needy local residents.

The Belgium Lions, Fredonia Lions, Fredonia Lioness Lions, Newburg Lions, Saukville Lions and Port Washington Lions combined to provide $3,033 to Adrian Buntrock of Newburg, who is battling a high-grade glioblastoma brain tumor, and Amalia Burmesch of Fredonia, who lost her eyesight due to a rare disease known as idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

Buntrock was diagnosed in August 2020 and continues to need treatment and therapy because of his condition. The Lions support will help offset ongoing medical and therapy expenses.

The Fredonia Lions Club donated an additional $1,200 to Burmesch. Combined, the funds will allow her to purchase an OrCam MyEye 2 Camera.

The device uses Bluetooth technology and a small camera mounted on eyeglasses or an ear piece, allowing blind people to see facial recognition, printed words and close surroundings.

The camera will help her as she pursues a degree in health care from Concordia University of Wisconsin in Mequon, with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner or medical doctor.
