Library card sign-up month celebrated in Saukville

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Oscar Grady Library in Saukville is marking the occasion by encouraging people to take advantage of what  the library has to offer.

In addition to books, library cards give people access to museum and attraction passes, yard games, free classes, WiFi access and career resources.

Replacement library cards are free in September. New library cards are always free.

Also in September, the library is rolling out Tonie figurines and Tonieboxes for children, which can be checked out for seven days.

Tonieboxes are screenless audio players designed for kids ages 1 to 12 or older that allow them to listen to stories and music independently. The boxes have a place for figurines on top.

September is a busy month at the Oscar Grady Library, which has a full calendar of programs.

The Morning Fiction Book Club will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, to discuss “Isola” by Allegra Goodman.

Also on Sept. 3, the Friends of the Oscar Grady Library will hold its membership meeting at 6 p.m.

Nonmembers are welcome to attend to learn about the group. Recommended revisions to the organization’s bylaws will be discussed ahead of a final vote on the changes in December.   

Chair yoga will be held at 10:15 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Led by library staff members, the 30-minute sessions include gentle stretching while seated designed to improve flexibility and enhance well-being for people of all fitness levels.

At 11 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9, the library will offer First Step to Strength sessions.

Participants in this strength-training program for adults who are new to exercise will use light hand weights to gradually build strength, improve balance, increase muscle mass and support bone health.

The Fiber Arts Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, to work on individual projects in a group environment. Participants should bring their own projects to work on. There is no instructor, but the group offers an opportunity to share ideas, tips and inspiration.

The Evening Nonfiction Book Club will discuss “Fire Weather: A True Story from a Hotter World” by John Vaillant when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The Love and Lore Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, to discuss “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern.

The Afternoon Fiber Arts Group will meet at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. Like the evening version of this program, participants work on individual projects they bring with them in a group environment.

The library will host the Badger Talks program Howard Schweber Constitutional Interpretation: Theory, Practice and History at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21.

Schweber, a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will explore the most influential approaches to constitutional interpretation while discussing what originalism, textualism and living constitution mean.

The Mitchell Park Domes in Milwaukee will be the subject of a program at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, led by Paula Zamiatowski, an interpretative educator at the horticulture conservancy.

Zamiatowski will discuss what visitors can see at the Domes and how exhibits change throughout the year.

Programs for teenagers include Pokémon Diamond Art at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.

Participants can bring their favorite Pokémon designs to life by creating colorful magnets using tiny resin “diamonds.” All supplies are provided.
