LETTERS: Cedar Gorge preserve would benefit economy and nature
To Ozaukee Press:
Ozaukee Washington Land Trust and Ozaukee County have collaborated over the past four-plus years on the 131-acre Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs Nature Preserve project along the shore Lake Michigan between Grafton and Port Washington. The plan offers a balanced approach for public space, conservation and residential development.
Recently, an anonymous lawmaker on the Joint Finance Committee blocked the Knowles Nelson Stewardship grant approved for the nature preserve by the DNR.
The Ozaukee County Board previously determined this project was the highest and best use of this land. On April 6, the board had the opportunity to use some of its federal pandemic relief funds to help complete this project. Unfortunately for the families, residents and businesses of Ozaukee County, the county grant was rejected by a three-vote margin.
Cedar Grove Clay Bluffs will be an asset the entire community can enjoy if there is a will on the part of our elected leaders to commit financially to this project.
Headwaters Economics reported: “Outdoor recreation drives significant economic activity across diverse economic sectors in Wisconsin. More than 93,000 jobs are supported by outdoor recreation, and $7.8 billion is contributed to the state gross domestic product by the outdoor recreation industry.”
Most people in this area are familiar with the Lion’s Den Gorge. Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs preserve is adjacent to this nature preserve. This project would create a regional outdoor crown jewel for this area. More tourist dollars will flow into our communities.
Due to the blocked DNR grant and the lack of this county’s financial commitment, Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs will not move forward unless private donations come to the rescue. To help that cause, go to owlt.org/donate.
