LETTER: Volunteers make Port thrive, our city needs more of them
To Ozaukee Press:
I hear from various organizations that recruiting volunteers is an increasing challenge. Examples include churches (always), the Port Washington Historical Society, the Friends of the Library, the VFW and the Fish Days Committee. I suspect there are many others just as important but outside my view.
Volunteers are instrumental to making Port Washington a thriving community.
The free market does not meet all needs unless you want to pay more. The government does not meet all needs unless you want higher taxes. Volunteers step up to fill the gaps, or if not, the gaps remain.
I have heard speculation that younger folks don’t volunteer as much as their parents did. Unfair. My actual experience is that younger folks care about Port Washington just as much as retired folks do and that younger folks make enthusiastic volunteers. We all have a role to play.
Volunteer for the sake of the community and you will fill a gap, potentially find new friends and have some fun too.
