LETTER: Town of Saukville officials are open to all options to fix 33-I

To Ozaukee Press:

We read the editorial in the July 4 issue of Ozaukee Press with both surprise and disappointment, and are left wondering if we were attending the same meeting. At no time did any Town of Saukville supervisor object to potential plans for a roundabout
at the intersection of Highway 33 and Highway I or to roundabouts in general.

In fact, the state safety engineer reached out to the Town Board regarding plans to improve the safety of the intersection and was seeking input from both supervisors and local residents. To that effect, an invitation was extended to the engineer to attend the Town Board meeting in June to explain plans, options and get feedback from the town, both supervisors and residents alike. Unfortunately, no one from the state attended the meeting.

Certainly, looking at all available options for improving the intersection in regards to safety as well as considering cost is a valid position for any citizen of the state as well as members of local government. To in any way imply the Town Board supervisors are callous to the safety of any person is not just false, it is absurd and offensive. We would recommend that the editors reach out to verify information before publishing such an inflammatory and inaccurate opinion.

Editor’s note: The editorial detailed the dangers of the intersection and urged the Town Board to consider a state suggestion of a roundabout as a remedy. It did not state or imply that town officials are not concerned about the safety of the crossing.
