LETTER: With only 650 students, NOSD doesn’t need school addition

To Ozaukee Press:

I would like to tell you what is missing from the NOSD referendum for $14.95 million.

There is no discussion of an increased and dedicated maintenance budget as a guaranteed percentage of the overall budget. Many of the proposed changes would require a significant increase in maintenance services.

Generally, additions are needed when the student body has outgrown the facility. The current facility was built to support 900 students. We are now at around 650 students. The current facility can support the student population.

The cost analysis of the 20-year referendum is fiscally irresponsible in paying for 15-year roofs, 10-15-year boilers, and five-year technology. These capital improvements will be depleted prior to the retirement of the 20-year referendum debt.

The improvements to the track sound wonderful, but this is another want. In recent years, Ozaukee High School was unable to field a track team and needed to join with Random Lake High School. This is a cost that should be borne by the Booster Club, private donations and corporate sponsors.         Responsible budgeting and financial stability need tough decisions. The administrative team of one superintendent and three principals is a high cost burden for such a small number of students.

My wife and I raised four kids whom we taught respect, self-reliance and responsibility. One of the lessons they learned is that one should not ask for more than they need.
