LETTER: Hard to buy notion that Dems are not espousing socialism
To Ozaukee Press:
The letter to the editor in last week’s Ozaukee Press written by John Strauss, who is a frequent contributor to the Press opinion pages, had some salient points. However, I am hard pressed to buy his notion that we shouldn’t think the spate of Democratic presidential candidates as espousing socialist platforms.
He made the statement that “caring for citizens” isn’t socialism, and he suggested the plethora of free-wheeling and financially careless programs being put forth by said candidates is to benefit all.
I honestly think that all of us do indeed believe in caring for citizens. The question always comes down to the process. How do we do this? I, for one, do not think the process of socialism in which government attempts to procure the rights of collectivity, production and distribution is the answer; nor do I think it is compatible with a democratic capitalistic society.
