LETTER: Grafton lost a recreational resource when pond drained

The Grafton millpond, the placid, scenic and historic body of Milwaukee River water on the upstream side of the Bridge Street Dam, was drained when a gate on the dam failed.

To Ozaukee Press:

The millpond in Grafton was a place of recreation for residents and visitors alike. We watched the herons, cranes, ducks and majestic egrets. Now it is a haven of geese in mud and detritus.

We need to welcome families and friends for the kayaking, scenic rides in small boats and fishing the millpond offered before it was accidentally drained. If we just fixed the mechanical part, we can have it look beautiful again.

Don’t forget the dam has a practical use too—we can all enjoy the millpond.
