LETTER: Give tariffs a try; if they don’t work we can try socialism

To Ozaukee Press:

I don’t understand the furor over the tariffs that finally were imposed by President Donald Trump.

For years the unions and workers of the United States wanted us to buy American products regardless of prices to keep manufacturing here. Now we have the most opportune time to correct the trade imbalance with world countries, but our corporate farmers and corporate elites want to stop the momentum.

There are a lot of greedy, hungry entities that want to keep things as they are or change things for their personal benefit. Remember how the politicians and businesses insisted AT&T be broke up to smaller companies? And now all you see is mergers of the smaller communication companies.

I’m sure the smaller countries with impoverished citizens aren’t paying $100 a month for phone service. The consumer was supposed to benefit by these changes, and just look how much they saved us. They also persuaded us that commercial-free TV was the way to go with cable or satellite. And now we pay $100 a month for commercials on TV.

Let’s at least try this tariff and trade position till 2020, and if it doesn’t work, go to socialism. Then the government will fix everything.
