LETTER: Do your duty by adopting a fire hydrant, shoveling it out

To Ozaukee Press:

Adopt a fire hydrant and shovel it out three feet around.  It does not take a lot of time.  Think of the civic pride for a job well done  Pat your snow shovel on your back!

Most municipalities do not shovel out the snow around fire hydrants. That is the responsibility of local residents, a mostly unknown fact.

If a hydrant is buried in snow, firefighters have to find it and shovel it out before attaching their hoses. Seconds matter if your or your neighbor’s house is on fire.

The City of Port Washington does a great job putting raised flags on their hydrants, so help out that little stumpy red guy that looks like a Lego action figure.
