LETTER: Changing screen technology adds risk to Foxconn ‘bribery’

To Ozaukee Press:

All that Scott Walker and the Republicans in control of our state have done for the Wisconsin economy is to lure companies with cheaper labor and tax incentives, which in reality is legalized bribery.

The Foxconn deal is corporate welfare at its finest. Taxpayers are paying for this but may never see any benefit. Already it has been reported in the Wall Street Journal that some Foxconn jobs will go to workers imported from China, rather than to Wisconsinites.

What’s more, Foxconn’s business success in Wisconsin is far from guaranteed. Newer and better OLED (organic light-emitting diode) television screen technology is already taking market share away from the LCD technology to which Foxconn is committed. Foxconn’s LCD products could easily be obsolete long before the state breaks even on the deal.

Favoring one technology over another is the very thing Republican politicians have claimed they’re against; they insist that we should let the marketplace decide. As one prominent Republican said a while back, if the government could pick winners and losers, Communism would have worked.
