LETTER: Brooks’ behavior sheds light on culture that abides disrespect

To Ozaukee Press:

Last week we learned that Assembly District 60 Rep. Rob Brooks was admonished by his own party and asked to resign by Gov. Walker due to racist and sexist remarks that he made to colleagues. These stories of disrespect or abuse seem common lately and often bring back difficult memories for many people. They bring me hurt and pain too.

These common experiences make me both horrified and hopeful. Horrified that this kind of behavior is tolerated and, worse, baked into the culture of our educational, government and business institutions. By bringing these experiences to light, we realize that we are not alone and we have a voice. This gives me hope we can change our society.

As a candidate for the Wisconsin Assembly, I am asked by a lot of people why I’m running, especially why I’m running against an incumbent in what is considered a Republican district. I explain about growing up in a military family where my dad taught me that “your troops eat first” and learning about servant leadership, the idea that your job as a leader is to make sure that others have what they need to be successful.

I also have spent 25 years managing complicated electrical projects, leading teams and helping them solve complex problems and achieve common goals. I believe I can be a good servant leader for our district, represent all our constituents fairly and help Wisconsin move forward.

Empowering others to realize their full potential begins with respecting everyone, all the time. As a society we are not there yet. As leaders, we must strive to meet this ideal.
