LETTER: All Americans should share outrage over brutality of ICE

To Ozaukee Press:

Last weekend in Minneapolis, the values that we hold dear as American citizens were shattered by the reckless actions of our current administration. I am sad, angry and alarmed. I believe everyone should be.

An American citizen lost his life at the hands of a militarized federal government. Alex Pretti died exercising both his First Amendment and Second Amendment rights. This is a watershed moment that calls for something to be done.

I am asking my fellow Americans to use your voices to speak up, to join those who are already sounding the alarm. Question yourselves if this is the version of America you dreamed of. If the answer is no, stand firm and resolute in declaring that this federal overreach and violence is wrong on all accounts, and it must stop. Demand that we return to the kind of civil discourse and behavior that demonstrates a sincere effort by all sides to solve problems. Be adamant that we embrace the values of cooperation that once made America great.

This is not a zero-sum game where winner takes all. Left or right, we must stand together and have the courage to declare enough is enough—things have gone too far.

I understand that our country is deeply divided, that both sides have strongly held beliefs, but on this issue we cannot and must not stand apart.
