LETTER: 25 years later, 9/11 numbers tell story of terror, tragedy

The 25th anniversary of the attacks on America that happened on September 11, 2001 is commemorated this year. The timeframe of that tragedy will help those who were not born then to know what happened that day.

8:46 a.m. American Airlines flight 11 crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

9:03 a.m. United Airlines flight 175 crashes into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

9:37 a.m. American Airlines flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon.

9:59 a.m. The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses. 

10:03 a.m. United Airlines Flight 93 crashes in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after a passenger revolt against the hijackers

10:28 a.m. The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

Number of people who died in the North Tower collapse—1,400-1,700.

Number of people who died in the South Tower collapse—1,400-1,462.

Number of people who died in the Pentagon crash—125 workers and civilians.

Number of people who died in the Shanksville crash—59 passengers and crew

First responders who died— 441, including 343 New York City firefighters and police officers, 37 Port Authority police officers, eight paramedics and EMTs,

55 military personal at the Pentagon.

That day’s victims reflect the racial, ethnic and spiritual heritage of our country. Religions represented by those lost on 9/11 include Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikh and also agnostic and atheist backgrounds. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum displays flags from more than 90 nations to honor the ethnic heritages of those who died that day.
