LeRoy Meyer

LeRoy Meyer was a lifelong farmer who knew much about life, mechanics, sheepshead and rummy.

Mr. Meyer, 85, died at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan on Thursday, March 15.

He was born Nov. 2, 1932, to Edwin and Elizabeth Ardts Meyer in the Town of Fredonia.

He attended St. Nicholas Grade School before graduating from Random Lake High School in 1950.

On April 23, 1955, he married Ruth Jacoby at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Dacada. The couple settled on a farm in the Town of Sherman and started their family.

Mr. Meyer actively worked his dairy farm until he went into the hospital.

“It was his life,” his son Roger said.

Mr. Meyer had other jobs, such as doing assembly and repair work at Feldmann Engineering & Manufacturing for nearly 40 years.

Mr. Meyer enjoyed reading the paper and farm news.

“He did a lot of reading,” his son said.

Mr. Meyer also enjoyed playing sheepshead with his family, and he taught his grandchildren how to play rummy.

He was not shy.

“Pa was pretty outgoing,” his son said.

And he said Mr. Meyer was the smartest man he ever knew.

“He knew the way things were and he told you,” his son said.

Mr. Meyer was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Lakes Congregation.

Survivors include his wife Ruth; children Roger (Barbara) of the Town of Fredonia, James of the Town of Sherman, Daniel (Sandra) of Silver Creek, Peter (Chris) of the Town of Scott, Stephen (Bonnie) of the Town of Belgium, Mary (Jeffrey) Ternes of Random Lake, Susan (Glen) Schnelle of Hingham and Ronald (fiancée Theresa Huether) of Campbellsport.

He is further survived by 24 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother John (Linda) Meyer of Kiel; and sisters-in-law Dolores Schroeder of Cascade and Luella Ansay of Belgium.

He was preceded in death by brother Ralph Meyer; brothers-in-law Roland Jacoby, Donald Schroeder and Arno Ansay; and sister-in-law Alice Jacoby.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on March 19 at Our Lady of the Lakes-St. Nicholas Chapel, Dacada. Father Neil Zinthefer was the officiant.

Mr. Meyer was buried in St. Mary Cemetery, Random Lake.

The Eernisse Funeral Home handled arrangements.
