L. Don DuMez

L. Don DuMez, 86, of Oostburg passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls surrounded by his family. There is comfort knowing he is standing before his Savior, whole again.

Don was born Aug. 19, 1937, in Sheboygan, the son of Bernard and Beatrice (Dirkse) DuMez.

He grew up in Oostburg, graduating from Oostburg High School in 1955.

He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

On July 11, 1958, he married Mary Lou Harmelink at Gibbsville Reformed Church. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

For 41 years, Don worked as an installer repairman for Verizon (formerly GTE) in Random Lake. He retired in 2000 and later enjoyed working for Luedtke Electric and Oostburg Bank as a bank courier and maintenance specialist.

Don was a current member of Gibbsville Church and former member of Oostburg Christian Reformed Church, where he had been a deacon and helped with maintenance work.

He was also a member of the Oostburg Fire Department, Hartman Cemetery Board, Oostburg Christian School Board and local Kiwanis Club, where he helped with many events. He had a heart to serve others and provided community service in numerous capacities over the years.

He was a family oriented person, and his family was his pride and joy. He enjoyed attending events for his children and grandchildren and helping them with household projects.

Throughout his life, he cherished time spent at Lake Michigan, especially the week shared with his family every summer.

A car enthusiast, Don also loved working on his 1968 Buick Wildcat.

Don is survived by his wife Mary Lou; their children Julie (Phil) Meyer, Debra DuMez (Douglas Schaefer), John (Julie) DuMez and Jeff (Jen) DuMez; grandchildren Cassondra (Robbie) Pratt, Joe Meyer (Lauren Giese), Leah (fiance Devin Bayer), Lucas and Jonathan Bischoff and Aaron (Katie), Kayla, Levi (fiance Ashlyn Kolste), Lauren, Ben and Evelyn DuMez; great-grandchild Joanna DuMez; former son-in-law Christopher Bischoff; siblings Jane (Duane) LeBreck and Sue (Art) Dulmes; sisters-in-law Vonnie DuMez, Jean DuMez, Darlene (Ron) Navis and Bonnie (Stan) Ramaker; brother-in-law Glenn (Luann) Harmelink; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marilyn (Keith) Brill and brothers Duane and Michael DuMez.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, at Gibbsville Church with full military honors to follow. All are welcome to view a livestream of the funeral at www.wenigfh.com on Don’s obituary page.

The family will receive visitors at Wenig Funeral Home, 108 Center Ave. in Oostburg, on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Gibbsville Church from 10 to 11 a.m.

He will be laid to rest at Hartman Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice or Oostburg Christian School.
