It’s not technically a grocery store, but Kwik Trip sells meat, milk, eggs, bread, bananas and cold and hot convenience foods, and it plans to open a store in Belgium.

The Village Plan Commission on Monday approved a site plan for a building application from Kwik Trip, which hopes to replace How-Dea Service Center at 106 N. Royal Ave.

Kwik Trip, according to its letter to the village, wants to open a store with 10 fuel dispensers, including four lanes for diesel fuel, a truck scale, car wash and about 41 truck parking stalls. The store would be open 24 hours a day and sell produce, bakery,  food, groceries and other convenience store merchandise.

“It is going to be one of their larger stores,” Village Clerk Julie Lesar said.

The store would create an estimated 25 to 30 jobs, according to the letter.

Kwik Trip hasn’t closed on the sale of the How-Dea Service Center property, which includes Luxembourg Cafe. The restaurant is expected to remain in operation but the service center would be razed.

The Plan Commission also approved sign permits for Kwik Trip, but one sign that is slated to be 60 feet tall will require a variance since village ordinance only allows 30 feet. A meeting on that is scheduled for Nov. 3.

A stormwater management plan will also need to be drafted and approved by the Village Board, Lesar said.
