Korean War veteran to be May 15 speaker

Korean War British Army front-line veteran Ted Warwick is the speaker for the Monday, May 15, meeting of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Military Historians.

The meeting will be at the Rose-Harms American Legion Hall in Grafton.

Warwick, a Grafton resident, will discuss his memories of growing up in wartorn England  during the World War II Battle of Britain “blitz” and being evacuated with other schoolmates to the safety of the rural countryside away from family.

In late 1950, as a British Army soldier, Warwick was sent to Korea as part of the entire UN Combat Force to fight the North Koreans and Communist Chinese pushing toward Seoul.

His unit, the Gloucestershire (Glosters) Regiment, was placed on a strategic hill overlooking the Imjin River in far northwestern South Korea.

In late April 1951, nearly 30,000 Chinese attacked to take the hill against about 735 British soldiers.  For three days, the British held out, inflicting 3,000 battle deaths on the enemy. But running out of ammunition and other supplies, they were surrounded and many were taken prisoner.

Warwick was among roughly 40 soldiers to escape.

Doors to the hall at 1540 13th Ave. open at 5:30 p.m.

Admission is $25, which includes a buffet dinner from Ferrante’s and the speaker’s presentation. A limited number of $10 seats just for the speaker’s program  are available.
