Joan McGarty

Joan McGarty (nee Chudy) of Port Washington, Wis., passed away on April 2, 2026, at Lawlis Family Hospice in Mequon, Wis., due to complications from a stroke. 

Born on Jan. 11, 1942, in Milwaukee, Joan led a life marked by warmth, generosity and a deep love for her family and community. 

A 1960 graduate of Custer High School, Joan embarked on a diverse career path that reflected her adaptability and commitment. She contributed her talents to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Kohl’s Department Store, National Cash Register Co. and MGIC, among other companies. 

Beyond her professional endeavors, Joan served as a crossing guard in Port Washington for many years, a role that allowed her to connect with people daily and demonstrate her caring nature. Joan was widely known for her open heart and giving spirit. She had a remarkable ability to engage with anyone, regardless of background or circumstance, always willing to share a conversation and offer kindness. Those who knew Joan remember her as a thoughtful gift giver and a friend to all. 

Her passions extended into her personal interests, where she delighted in spending quality time with her grandsons Mason, Dylan, Brayden and Ronan. Her role as a grandmother was one of her proudest accomplishments, and the moments shared with her grandchildren were treasured deeply. 

Joan was also an active member of the NASH Metropolitan Car Club, enjoying swap meets and rummage sales. Her fascination with Wisconsin history and history in general enriched her appreciation for the world around her. Among her fondest memories were the road trips taken with her family, traveling together across the United States. These journeys created bonds and stories that will continue to be cherished by those who shared them. 

Joan is survived by her beloved son Michael McGarty and his wife Cheryl, her grandchildren Mason, Dylan, Brayden and Ronan and her sisters-in-law Sharon Chudy and Mary Mead. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard McGarty, her brother Tom Chudy and her parents Joseph and Helen Chudy. 

Joan McGarty’s legacy of kindness, dedication and love will live on in the hearts of her family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed, remembered always for the warmth she brought to every life she touched. 

Joan was laid to rest alongside her husband at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Port Washington, Wis. Private family services were held.
