Honoring those who served their country, continue to serve their community

Grafton High School football players charged onto Kellner Field with American flags in hand for the annual Military and First Responders Appreciation Night held during the Black Hawks Friday, Aug. 28, game. Honored during halftime were (from left in photo below) Doug Arendt, Arnold “Hunsie” Kaul Jr. and Tricia Maurer. Arendt served in the Army and Army National Guard, attaining the rank of sergeant, before becoming a music teacher in the Grafton School District for 25 of his 27 years in public education. Kaul is an Army veteran and lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Grafton, where he has dedicated countless hours to preserving church history. Maurer, a military veteran and burn nurse, is a community volunteer who has organized everything from a fundraiser for a family devastated by a disaster to a winter safety program for middle school students.  Photos by Mitch Maersch
