Harvey R. Gruenwald

Harvey R. Gruenwald, a longtime Cedarburg resident, through God’s grace combined with his faith, was born to eternal life on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the age of 91 years.  
He was the beloved husband of Virginia for over 70 years; loving father of daughter Cheryl Moulds (Peter) and sons Karl and Curtis (Deborah) Gruenwald; and cherished and loving grandfather of Jon C. Gruenwald (Erika) of Port Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Lilly along with his sister Alice.   
Harvey is further survived by other relatives and friends.
A lifelong resident of Ozaukee County, Harvey was born and raised in Mequon, eventually moving to Cedarburg after being married in 1946.
He traveled to Cedarburg using the electric interurban railway to attend Cedarburg High School; and after graduation attended Marquette University for engineering.
Devoted to his country, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II.
Upon his return, he began working for his father-in-law, and later Harvey purchased half interest in the family business to be known as Jung-Gruenwald Furniture & Appliance in Cedarburg. Many years later, he sold his interest and formed a business partnership with his son Curtis, until his retirement in 1986. For a number of years after retirement, he continued helping out, since business and working with customers, along with being active, was so much a part of him.  
He was always there to lend a hand and dig in to help others, be they family, friends or neighbors.
The home he resided in for close to 60 years reflects much of his hard work that was done in the initial building process, along with all of the maintenance he did over the years.   
Taking after his father, gardening and making things grow was something he truly enjoyed.
In his earlier years, Harvey was very active in a variety of organizations, including his church, various civic groups and especially the Cedarburg Fire Department.
He loved spending time in the Northwoods of Wisconsin at the special place on North Twin Lake. Many special cherished Northwoods memories were created there.
He was of the “old school” where quality, honesty, integrity and fair dealing were essential ingredients to having those you serve become longtime customers and friends. He was of a time when a handshake and a promise were all that were needed, truly a lost era no longer present in today’s society.  
Harvey will be missed by family, friends and those who came across his path over the years to truly get to know him. He ran the race that was set before him, he kept the faith, has finished well and has claimed his prize. While his temporal journey here on earth has ended, life has truly just begun.
A memorial service was held on Monday, Dec. 18, at Friedens Church in Port Washington.

Eernisse Funeral Home is serving the family, with burial in the family plot at Zur Ruhe Cemetery in Cedarburg.
