Grafton takes 24th at state

A sophomore led Grafton High School’s swim and dive team to 24th place at the division 2 state meet last Friday.

Sophia Scolman scored 395.3 points in diving to take fifth place and earn 14 points for the Black Hawks.

Sophomore Trinity McNall of Monona Grove won with 468.8 points.

Scolman was only a few points from fourth place. Freshman Kamyla Held of Whitnall scored 399.8 points.

It was Scolman’s second trip to the state meet and a marked improvement over last year, where she took last of 16 divers.

At this year’s sectional, Scolman finished second with 393.8 points, behind Whitnall’s Bella Smith, who scored 463.2. Smith at state took second with 200.7 points.

The Hawks scored 24 points to place 24th of 35 teams. Edgeood ran away with the meet with 328.5 points. McFarland was a distance second with 209.

Grafton senior Olivia Konzen swam in three events in her third trip to state.

Konzen took 12th in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.23 seconds, scoring five points.

McFarland senior Alexandra Moderski won the race in a division 2 state record of 22.77, breaking her own 2015 mark of 22.84.

In the 100 freestyle, Konzen finished last of 16 swimmers in 56.23 for one point.

Moderski won with a division 2 record of 49.68, again breaking her own 2015 mark of 50.26.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the hawks finished 15th of 16. The team of Konzen, junior Grace Hahm and sophomores Elaine Proefrock and Allison Garncarz finished in 1:42.91 to score four points.

Edgewood won in 1:36.62.

The meet closed a decorated career for Konzen, who helped Grafton to two third-place finishes at state.

In 2016, Konzen helped the Hawks to first in the 200 medley relay and second in the 200 freestyle relay. Grafton took third with 180 points, behind McFarland’s 224 and Edgewater’s 337.

In 2015, Konzen led the 200 freestyle relay team to 14th. The Hawks took third with 203.5 points, behind McFarland’s 220 and Edgewater’s 277.5.

Konzen last year took ninth in the 50 freestyle with a 25.39.
