Shopko announced last week that its Grafton store is among seven in the state that will be closed, but a company spokeswoman said the Shopko Express in Port Washington will remain open.

The pharmacy at the Grafton store has already closed, and a liquidation sale has begun ahead of the April 7 store closing.

The Grafton Shopko at 1771 Wisconsin Ave. opened in 1989.

Shopko spokeswoman Michelle Hansen said the Shopko Express in Port will not close.

The other Shopko stores in Wisconsin slated to close are in Appleton, La Crosse, Menasha, Seymour, Sussex and Mauston.

The company plans to close another 38 stores nationwide.

Hansen would not comment on why the Grafton store is among those the company has chosen to close, but Bloomberg reported last month that Shopko was preparing to file for bankruptcy.

That news comes as one of Shopko’s suppliers, pharmaceutical supplier McKesson Corp, alleged in court filings that Shopko owes it more than $67 million.

Last month, Shopko, which is based in Ashwaubenon, announced it would close 42 of its pharmacies nationwide after a portion of its pharmacy branch was sold to Kroger Co., which owns the Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. Pick ’n Save, Metro Market and Copps stores are part of Roundy’s Supermarkets.

Hy-Vee, a Des Moines, Iowa-based supermarket chain, and CVS Pharmacy have also purchased Shopko pharmacy business.

Hansen said there are between 50 to 100 employees at each of Shopko’s department stores.
