Grafton golfers seek consistency; Schowalter shines for Port

Grafton High School’s golf team is looking to have everyone play well at once.

That hasn’t been the case for the Black Hawks this season, and it continued in three meets last week.

The Hawks had 175 strokes and finished last of seven teams at a North Shore Conference Mini-Meet at Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon on May 5.

Parker Strozewski and Jake Leidel each shot 42. Kendyl Conrad shot 45. Braxton Boehlke had 46 and Jack Birmingham had 49.

Homestead won with 150 strokes.

At the Bulldog Invite at Hidden Glen Golf Club in Cedarburg last Thursday, the Hawks had 332 strokes and tied Hartford for eighth of 12 teams.

Leidel shot 76. Strozewski had 83. Birmingham had 86. Boehlke had 87 and Conrad had 96.

Coach Phil Trottier said Hidden Glen might be the most challenging course the team plays.

The Hawks improved last Saturday at the Kaz Memorial Invitational at New Berlin Hills Country Club. Grafton had 337 strokes and tied for seventh with Catholic Memorial.

Leidel had 76 and finished fourth. Strozewski had 83. Boehlke had 87 and Conrad had 91. Birmingham had 97.

The course has small sloped greens and pin placements were difficult, especially in the wind, Trottier said.

“Jake played pretty well,” Trottier said. “We’re just trying to get three or four kids to play their best at the same time.”

Grafton was to play at Hartford Golf Club on Tuesday, May 12. The Hawks play at the Washington County Course on Thursday, May 14.

Schowalter scoring low for Port

Port Washington senior Jack Schowalter stepped up his game in the past week.

Schowalter on May 5 shot 78 and won the Glacier Trails Conference Mini-Meet at West Bend Lakes by three strokes.

Port had 369 strokes and was sixth of seven teams. Kewaskum won with 337.

Port’s Cooper Giese shot 92. Gabe Jerome shot 97. Brady Schmit shot 102 and Charlie Klein shot 108.

Last Thursday at another conference mini-meet at the Washington County Golf Course, Schowalter shot 38 and tied for first.

Port had 171 strokes and was fourth of seven teams. Kewaskum won with 160. Eric Krentz and Steven Schowalter each shot 44. Giese had 45. Schmit had 47.

“Jack seemed to figure things out,” coach Rory Palubiski said.

On Monday at a conference mini-meet at Hon-E-Kor in Kewaskum, Schowalter shot 41, tying for fourth. Port shot 176, fourth of seven teams. Kewaskum won with 162.

Giese had 44. Schmit had 45. Krentz had 46. Steven Schowalter had 55. Port plays at Currie Park in Milwaukee on Thursday, May 14, at Quit Qui Oc in Elkhart Lake on Friday, May 15, and in the Glacier Trails Conference Meet at the Washington County Golf Course on Wednesday, May 20.
