Grafton’s Jarmuz earns medal for USM

University School of Milwaukee High School junior Austin Jarmuz of Grafton brought home hardware from the Division 2 state track and field meet at La Crosse last weekend.

Jarmuz finished sixth in the 3,200-meter race in a personal-record 9 minutes, 18.54 seconds.

His race was delayed from Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday due to storms.

“I woke up feeling prepared and ready to go. It was a little hot and humid, but it didn’t affect me too much,” he said.

“My goal was to place and earn a medal. I started near the back of the pack, around 10th place, and worked my way up throughout the race.”

Then he turned it on.

“On the final lap, I gave everything I had. When I came down the homestretch and saw the finish line, I knew a medal was within reach,” he said. “Crossing the line was an incredible feeling because I knew all the hard work, training, and sacrifices throughout the season had paid off. Earning that medal and setting a big personal record made the moment even more special.”

Jarmuz was 15th in the 3,200 in 4:26.2.
