Gerry Orten

Mr. Gerry Orten of West Bend, formerly of Grafton, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, March 15, 2025, while vacationing in Alabama. He was 78 years old.
Gerry was born on Oct. 27, 1946, in Milwaukee to Walter and Carolyn (nee Hager) Orten. They tragically died when Gerry was 15 years old. William and Irene Pagel became his guardians, and he lovingly called them Pa and Ma. Gerry lived with them until he married.
Gerry graduated from Grafton High School with the Class of 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in San Diego for boot camp. He served during the Vietnam War and was stationed on the USS Merrick AKA97 cargo ship.
He learned part of his trade in the Navy. Following his service, he joined Steamfitters Local 601 and became an apprentice. He learned the rest of his trade in HVAC.
On Aug. 8, 1970, Gerry was united in marriage with Bonnie Stoecker at United Church of Christ in Jackson. They settled in the Grafton area and were blessed with one son.
Gerry was employed at Johnson Controls for 39 years and then took a position with the Cedarburg School District, where he continued for another seven years.
After he retired, Gerry and Bonnie traveled every winter in their RV.
Gerry was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Grafton.
A passionate coach, Gerry coached his son in sports, and together they coached his grandchildren in soccer, baseball and basketball. Gerry’s love of sports continued with watching the Packers and the Badgers whenever he could. He also enjoyed bowling and participated in leagues and tournaments with his son for many years.
Trips to Las Vegas were very special and Gerry loved to cut loose when he was there with his friends and family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Bonnie, their son Gerald “Gerry” (Ellen) Orten Jr. and grandchildren Frank “Bud” and Ashley. He is further survived by sister-in-law Barb (the late Scott) Orten, other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Carolyn, guardians Bill and Irene Pagel and brothers Jon and Scott Orten.
There will be a celebration of Gerry’s life on Saturday, March 29, at Shakers Lounge, 200 S. Railroad St., Saukville. The family will receive guests from 1 to 4 p.m.
Eernisse Funeral Home is assisting with family with arrangements.
