Feb. 14 program to address insectivores

Conservation biologist Bill Mueller will present a program on the status of insectivores during a Wednesday, Feb. 14, event sponsored by the Ozaukee Washington Birding Coalition and the Noel J. Cutright Bird Club.

Insectivores are species of  birds and bats that thrive on catching and eating insects while flying. There is growing evidence that insectivorous birds and bats are declining in proportion to the overall decline of flying insects.

Examples of birds being affected are purple martins, tree swallows, chimney swifts, whip-poor-wills, nighthawks and various flycatcher species.

Mueller’s presentation will primarily focus on three swallow species which can be found across much of Wisconsin — purple martins, tree swallows and barn swallows.

Mueller is an ornithologist and director emeritus of the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory.
