Family recovering after being injured in accident

A two-vehicle accident in the Town of Belgium on Friday injured five people.

A 2014 Toyota sport utility vehicle westbound on Jay Road failed to stop at the stop sign at Highway LL, striking a southbound 2001 Oldsmobile van at about 5:35 p.m., according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

The Oldsmobile was driven by Daniel Kruschke, 49, of Cedar Grove. The front passenger was his wife Shawna, 47. Both were  injured and taken via medical helicopter to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Their son Case, 14, was riding in back and was taken to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton and then Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.

The Toyota was driven by Daniel Moreno of Sheboygan, who was taken to Memorial Hospital in Sheboygan with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A passenger, Mikel Flores, 22, sustained minor injuries and was not transported to a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation. It does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor, the Sheriff’s Office said.

According to a post authored by Dan Kruschke on Shawna Kruschke’s Facebook page Monday, he came home Saturday morning with injuries to his thumb, elbow and chest, in addition to cuts and bruises. Case was released Saturday afternoon with cuts and bruises. Both have difficulty walking, but Kruschke said they will return to normal in time.

Shawna, he said, took the worst of the impact and had surgery to repair a broken forearm. She has a fractured knee and an ankle injury and remains in the hospital.

“All in all, we feel extremely lucky to be alive. God is so good,” he said in his post.

A Kruschke Family Benefit account has been set up at Oostburg State Bank for the family, according to a Facebook post shared by the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District, which Case goes to school. Moreno was to receive citations for failure to stop at a stop sign and causing great bodily harm, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Highway LL was closed for about four hours. We Energies responded to repair a damaged light pole. Lanser Towing removed the vehicles.

Other agencies assisting were the Belgium, Cedar Grove, Fredonia, Grafton, Mequon, Port Washington, Saukville and Thiensville fire departments, Fredonia Marshal’s Office, Port Washington Police Department, Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department, LifeNet Hartford Helicopter and ThedaStar Helicopter.
