Eugene ‘Gene’ Wester

Eugene “Gene” Wester, 80, passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2023, in Albuquerque, N.M., due to complications of end-stage dementia.

He was born July 23, 1942, in Port Washington, Wis., to Henry and Viola Wester of Belgium, Wis.

After graduating from Port Washington High School in 1960 and working in the area for several years, Gene moved his young family to Albuquerque in the early 1970s.

He proudly worked in the electrical departments of Allwoods, Builders Square and Home Depot, where he retired in 2010.

Gene enjoyed volunteering his time at the Meadowlark Senior Center and was known throughout his life as “the helpful neighborhood handyman.”

He was preceded in death by his daughter Jill Brady, both parents, brother Neil Wester and his wife Marsha, brother Wayne Wester and brother-in-law Russ Janowiak.

He is survived by his dedicated and loving wife of 22 years, Alberta “Berta” Wester, daughter Jodi Darnell (Andy), son Brian Wester (Christine) and son-in-law Ed Brady, all of New Mexico.

He is also survived by brother Bob Wester (Diane), brother Paul Wester (Mary), sister Mary Janowiak and sister-in-law Cherie Reed Wester, all of Wisconsin.   

Gene was blessed to have many friends and family members, including in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of humor and his willingness to help. We love you, Eddie Dunn.

On March 11, 2023, a Rosary at 9:30 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m. and reception will be held at San Ysidro Catholic Church at 5015 Corrales Rd., Corrales, NM 87048.
