Enjoying Sugar on Snow

Sugar Maple Nature School celebrated the maple sugaring season with a Sugar on Snow festival March 24 and 25, that brought people to visit the school, which is on the grounds of Ozaukee County’s Hawthorne Hills Park in the Town of Saukville and the adjoining Pioneer Village, to enjoy activities that included horse-drawn wagon rides, tree identification programs and a breakfast featuring pancakes and maple syrup. Top: Youngsters gathered for the breakfast, eager to taste the syrup. Lower right, Jeff Kierzek, director of community outreach for the school — a charter school of the Northern Ozaukee School District in Fredonia — boiled sap to demonstrate how syrup is made.
