EDITORIAL: Trimming the sail of an iconic sign

Looking a bit like a sailor aloft on the mast of a square-rigger, a worker serviced neon letters on the famous “Smith Bros. Fish Shanty” sign in downtown Port Washington. The sign, once the marque of the city’s legendary Smith Bros. restaurant, which has been out of business for years, remains on the roof of what is now the Duluth Trading Co. building as an enduring symbol of Port’s seafaring and commercial fishing history.
