E-cycle schedule may change

The annual E-cycle event, open to village and town of Belgium residents, may not be annual anymore.

The Town Board on Tuesday will discuss holding the event every other year.

The event has been held every spring the past several years with the town and village splitting the cost. This year, $6,000 was budgeted between the two municipalities but the total may come in lower. The village had to budget $2,000 from its fund balance account typically used for emergencies and other unexpected expenses.

The event allows residents to dispose of items such as monitors, TVs and microwaves for free during the event.

Some people complained that others outside the village are taking advantage of the event, having town and village residents drop items off for them.

Town Chairman Tom Winker said he knows several big-screen TVs don’t all come from one house, but the event helps keep trash out of the town’s ditches that he and other supervisors pick up on their own time. He said he understands people’s concerns and suggested discussing holding E-cycle day to every other year.
