Driver accused of being drunk when she hit cyclist

A 41-year-old Chicago woman accused of driving while drunk with her 2-year-old son in her SUV when she hit a bicyclist in the Town of Fredonia last week and left the scene faces multiple criminal charges in Ozaukee County Circuit Court.

Tenyka M. Ollie, whose son was not properly restrained in his car seat, is charged with two felony counts of threatening to cause bodily harm to a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor counts of first-offense operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle, hit and run and resisting an officer.

Ollie was arrested shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, and told an Ozaukee County sheriff’s deputy that she was on her way to a funeral in Illinois and had been driving all night. She said she had no idea how she ended up in Fredonia, according to a criminal complaint.

A deputy who responded to the report of an SUV hitting a man who the Sheriff’s Office believes was riding an electric bike in the area of Highway H and Fredonia-Kohler Road that morning talked with a witness who said he saw the SUV hit a bicyclist, who bounced off the hood of the vehicle and landed in the entrance to a gravel driveway.

The witness said the bicyclist got up and exchanged words with the driver of the SUV, who was later identified as Ollie, before Ollie drove away, the complaint states.

The witness said he told the bicyclist to call authorities and started following Ollie. He said she failed to stop for multiple stop signs and was “all over the road,” according to the complaint.

The deputy who responded to the area spotted Ollie’s SUV and followed her as she sped down a long private driveway.

Ollie eventually stopped, and as the deputy approached her vehicle and attempted to speak with her, she began rolling up her window. The deputy grabbed the window, pulled it down and reached inside the SUV to open the door, the complaint states.

Ollie, who did not have a valid driver’s license, began making incoherent statements, did not acknowledge hitting the bicyclist and became increasingly uncooperative. The deputy said her speech was slurred, her eyes were glassy and she smelled of alcohol, according to the complaint.

The deputy noticed Ollie’s son sitting in a forward-facing car seat with the straps hanging loosely in his lap. The 2-year-old, the deputy noted, should have been secured in a rear-facing car seat, the complaint states.

Ollie refused to get out of her vehicle, and after deputies removed her she began screaming and tried pulling away from them. She attempted to bite one deputy when he was searching her, then began hitting her head against the hood of a patrol vehicle as deputies tried to put her in the vehicle, according to the complaint.

Deputies searched Ollie’s SUV and found a bottle of tequila that was three-quarters empty as well as a four-pack of Seagrams Escape and a can of Cutwater Mango Margarita, both of which contain alcohol.

As deputies were taking Ollie to a hospital so a sample of her blood could be drawn, she began threatening them, telling one of them, “Someone in your family gon’ die .... I’m from Chicago. You know who my family is?” and saying to another his daughter was going to die, the complaint states.

At the hospital, a Child Protective Services employee spoke with Ollie about her son who was in the SUV. During the conversation, Ollie told the employee, “I’m drunk,” according to the complaint.

During a June 3 hearing, Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Steve Cain set Ollie’s bail at $7,500 and ordered her to maintain absolute sobriety.

The felonies Ollie is charged with are each punishable by a maximum three years in prison and three years of extended supervision.
