The old pool at Cedar Grove-Belgium Middle School that many said was already past its lifespan may reopen within several months as something unrecognizable.

The facility is being rebuilt for about $2 million from the district’s $21.6 million referendum that was approved by voters in April 2021.

“They are completely rebuilding the pool. Essentially, it will be a brand new pool within the four walls and roof of the current space,” Director of Buildings and Grounds Ben Lukens said.

The walls and floor of the pool are being removed, and the old mechanical equipment in the basement has been taken out, Lukens said.

Demolition of the pool was paused last week to allow a contractor to do foundation and shoring work since the new pool is shifting a little to the east, he said.

“This was planned for by the engineers ahead of time,” Lukens said.

“We are hoping for a fall of 2023 opening.”

The pool’s structure had slowly been crumbling, and those pieces were turned into a powdery substance and used to plug leaks.
