Dino-themed July activities scheduled at Port library

A variety of activities, including summer reading programs and book clubs, will be held at the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington during July.

Youth activities include:

A fossil scavenger hunt held through Aug. 8, with youngsters finding the nine fossils in the windows of downtown businesses, writing down the names of the business names and turning in the names at the library for a prize.

Scavenger hunt sheets will be available at both upstairs and downstairs circulation desks.

Storytimes with Miss Amanda at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Storytimes are most suited for preschoolers, and they include stories and crafts. The themes change each week.

The Lego building club meets from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 27. Those attending may build something using the library’s Legos and have it displayed in the library.

Sessions are geared toward children 5 and older.

A sensory playtime will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, July 24. The playtime includes a variety of tactile, sensory activity stations that children younger than 13 may explore with their caregiver. 

Paws for reading, where youngsters read out loud to certified therapy dog Gracie, will be held from 10 to 11 a.,m. Thursdays.

STEM-osaurus, a dinosaur-themed craft and creation activity for children ages 8 to 18, will be held at 12:30 p.m. on alternate Mondays.

The theme for  July 13 is Dino Derby, with those attending making racing potato cars. On July 27, the theme is Air Dry Clay, with those attending making dinosaur footprints, eyes and fossils.

All supplies will be provided, and those attending may bring their creations home.

Paleontology and painting is the theme for a 6 p.m. Thursday, July 16, event where youngsters may paint their favorite dinosaur, be it a triceratops, stegosaurus or velociraptor, on canvas. Art teacher  Sherri Kultgen will lead the session and provide painting tips and paleontology facts, All supplies will be provided.

Advance registration is required.

A “Tea-Rex” party will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 30. Those attending are asked to dress in their tea party or dino-favorite  attire.

Library staff members will wait on those attending as they sip tea (Kool-aid or lemonade), eat snacks, play classic tea party games and listen to the book “Tea Rex” by Molly Idle.

Adult and teen activities include:

A grief support group will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, July 1 and 15. The group is facilitated by Compassus Hospice.

The D&D PW Bookwyrms group meets from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays. Players and game masters of all experience levels are welcome.

Assistance will be provided to those seeking help in a job search from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 8 and 22. Those attending can learn about free employment tools and resources available through the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and Job Center of Wisconsin.

Those attending should book a time slot in advance.

A Short Story Hour  book group will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at the Port Washington Senior Center.

The Friday Morning Book Talk group will meet at 9:30 a.m. July 10.

The Novel Ideas Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 20

The Bring Your Own Book Club, where members share the book they are currently reading or just finished, no matter the genre, will meet at 5:30 p.m.  Thursday, July 23, at Cavelier Wine Bar.

Copies of the selected books for the various book clubs are available for checkout at the library.

  A Work in Progress Wednesday event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 22. Those attending may work on any project, including knitting, crocheting, painting, drawing or writing.

“Tyrannosaurus Taxidermy” will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9.

Those attending can make their own taxidermized dinosaur head to mount in their home by applying paper mache to a dino head base. They will also design a foam mount, then assemble and paint it.

Advance registration is required.

“Jurassic World: Rebirth” will be shown at 6  p.m. Friday, July 24.

In addition to watching the movie, which is rated PG-13, those attending will make and eat dino nuggets and answer trivia about the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” franchises. There will also be photo opportunities and the chance to win a door prize.
