Delleree excelling on college mat

The early returns on Mya Delleree’s college wrestling career are similar to that of her record in high school.

Delleree, a 2024 Ozaukee High grad who finished second once and fifth twice in state wresting meets, qualified for this weekend’s National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships in Coralville, Iowa, as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Delleree credits her support network for her continued success.

“Adjusting from high school to college was no easy task. But the one thing about me is no matter how hard something is, I will always have family to help me through it. One person who helped me the most was my older brother Jaysen,” Delleree said.

“But while being here I have found more family. My wrestling family. There were many girls that I have meet here that have helped me so much. Ella Creighton from Badger, Wis., in, Nellie Stagg from Iowa and Sophia Garza from Texas have been there for me and I’ve been there for them. They have also made the change from high school to college very easy. They are some of my best friends now.”

To qualify for nationals, Delleree went 3-2 and finished fourth at 124 pounds in the Region 6 competition on Feb. 23 in St. Charles, Mo.

She beat Margaret Gillmore (16-16) of UW-Stevens Point in a 10-0 technical fall in 1 minute, 47 seconds, then lost a 12-2 technical fall to Shelby Moore (27-4) of McKendree University and was pinned by Halyel Gilson (3-3) of Lindenwood University in 4:59.

Delleree won her final two matches, beating Gillmore in the fifth-place match in a 12-2 technical fall in 3:43 to qualify.

She won the fourth-place match with a 10-0 technical fall over Amelia Adams (23-17) of UW-Stevens Point, avenging a 16-3 technical fall loss in 3:20 to Adams in a dual meet on Jan. 24.

She got the last spot. The top four qualify.

“I ran to my family in the stands because not only was I filled with joy but so were my parents and my little brother, who currently wrestles for Ozaukee, Jake Delleree,” Delleree said.

“I am very excited to be wrestling at nationals and having so many people back home cheering me on.”

Delleree faces Bethany Regione of Aurora University in the first round.
