December activities set at Riveredge Center

A variety of programs are scheduled at Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville in December.

“Winter Adventures: Frosty Season Fire Building” will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

Those attending will gather tinder, kindling and fuelwood and learn fire building basics.

Children younger than 6 must be accompanied by an adult.

There is no fee for All-Access members. The cost for Trail-Pass members is $5 and for nonmembers is $7.

“Wolves of the Midwest” will be discussed from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Maddy Witt, program manager at the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minn., will discuss the role wolves play in the ecosystem and how they interact and affect other organisms.

There is no fee for the session, which may be attended online.

A Nature Tots program on hibernation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9.

A story will be told to illustrate how animals survive the winter, then participants will head outdoors to build shelters and play a game of winter hide and seek.

There is no fee for All-Access members. The cost for Trail-Pass members is $5 and for nonmembers is $7.

An “Owl Prowl” night hike will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9.        Those attending will learn about the resident barred owls before the hike.

Advance registration is required for the free program.

A holiday bough trimming workshop run in conjunction with the Friends of the Domes will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11.

The session will address how to properly trim evergreen trees and create natural holiday decorations with the trimmings.

Under the guidance of a Riveredge naturalist, participants will identify and trim boughs from native trees at the center, then weave them into a table wreath.

Coffee and cocoa will be provided.

The fee for Riveredge or Domes members is $20. For nonmembers, the fee is $25.
