County receives railroad permit
It took months, but Ozaukee County has received its permit from the Union Pacific Railroad to do work under the crossing on Main Street in Belgium.
“Everybody’s excited we’ve got the permit,” M Squared Engineering Construction Leader Peggy Stucky said.
Now, contractors will have to return to the project to connect the storm sewer line underneath the tracks.
But boring work must be done first, Stucky said.
“All we can hope for is for good weather and our boring contractor gets done with his other jobs,” she said.
The plan is for boring to be done in October, pushing back the project’s completion date of Sept. 28.
More details on the next steps will be determined at crews’ weekly construction meeting Thursday afternoon, which will be held after the public information meeting at 1 p.m.
“This will be our first meeting since we received (the permit) with everybody here,” Stucky said.
Crews on Tuesday finished installing curb on the west side of the tracks. After the concrete dries, conduit will be installed for light poles. That work is scheduled to start on Tuesday, Stucky said.
Grading for sidewalks will also occur next week.
Residents should be able to get their driveway access back in two weeks. People with disabilities who need help getting into their driveways should call the field office at (920) 323-6714, Stucky said.
Heavy rains did not slow the project.
“There was no flooding on Main Street,” Belgium Director of Public Works Dan Birenbaum said.
