Conference relays present fast competitors

The Grafton and Port Washington high school swim and dive teams faced stiff competition in last week’s North Shore Conference Relay Meet at Homestead.

The Black Hawks scored 48 points to take fifth place of eight teams, and Port was last with 33 points on Dec. 18.

Whitefish Bay won with 79, followed by Homestead with 68.

Diving helped both teams as the Pirates’ group took second place with 231.2 points to Bay’s 248.6. Grafton was third with 216 points.

Grafton took second in the 500-yard freestyle relay in 4 minutes, 39.31 seconds. Results didn’t have swimmers’ names.

The Hawks took third in the 300 breaststroke relay in 3:29.14 and in the 400 individual medley relay in 4:13.94.

They were fifth in the 300 backstroke relay in 3:11.19, the 300 butterfly relay in 3:20.53 and in the 100 freestyle relay in 56.9.

They took sixth in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:12.98 and in the 400 medley relay in 5:21.19.

The Pirates team of Wyatt Roller, Shane McConahy, Nick Hadacek and Alex Sharbuno took third in the 100 freestyle relay in 48.6.

The team of Roller, Cody Seitz, Neil Tumey and Sharbuno was fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.53.

The team of Joseph Huebner, McConahy, Dagan Daniels and Mavrick Roller was fifth in the 100 medley relay in 1:00.11.

The team of Hadacek, Seitz, Sharbuno and Tumey was sixth in the 400 individual medley relay in 4:34.79, and the team of Daniels, Chase Orvis, Peter Meier and Mavrick Roller was sixth in the 200 medley relay in 2:12.1.

The Pirates last Thursday earned their first win of the season, 102-81, at home over non-conference opponent Kiel.

They won three swimming events and diving.

Sharbuno won the 200 individual medley in 2:25.3, and Orvis won the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.91.

Cale Theis won diving with 243.25 points.

The 200 freestyle relay team of McConahy, Wyatt Roller, Tumey and Sharbuno won in 1:44.64.

When the Pirates didn’t win an event, they still racked up points. In six events, they took second and third places.

The Pirates host NSC opponent West Bend Co-op at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3. They swim at a Cedarburg invite on Saturday, Jan. 5 and at Grafton on Jan. 10.

The Hawks swim at Hartford on Jan. 3 before the invite at Cedarburg on Jan. 5 and against Port on Jan. 10.
